Panera Bread Undergoes Menu Transformation, Refocusing on Sandwiches and Salads
After a period of expansion attempting to attract dinner guests, Panera Bread is undergoing its “largest menu transformation ever,” with a renewed focus on what it’s best known for – sandwiches and salads. This shift marks a “new era” for the chain, which has seen its menu grow unwieldy in recent years.
New Era: Nine New Items and Recipe Enhancements
Beginning April 4, customers can look forward to nine new menu items and recipe enhancements for 12 existing salads and sandwiches. Panera confirmed that flatbreads, introduced in 2019, are being eliminated as the chain refocuses on its core customer base. The changes are not related to a larger menu test last year, which saw a significant reduction in items. Despite the modifications, kitchen sink cookies, kids’ menu, and soufflés remain on the menu.
New Additions to the Menu
The updated menu will feature several new items, including a “Toasted Italiano” with ham, soppressata, and provolone; a “Chicken Bacon Rancher” sandwich with chicken, bacon, and white cheddar; a “Ciabatta Cheesesteak”; and a “Ranch Cobb” salad. Panera is also introducing a new macaroni and cheese topped with bacon.
Classic Upgrades and Budget-Friendly Options
Longtime menu favorites like the “Bravo Club” sandwich and “Fuji Apple” salad will receive upgrades, with more details to be shared in March. The chain aims to attract budget-conscious customers by pricing some new items under $10 and promises that the “transformed menu will help streamline operations for bakery-café teams.”
A Return to Panera’s Roots
“We are getting back to Panera at its best with these menu updates that are centered completely on our guests and what they love about us,” said Alicia Mowder, senior vice president of product strategy and insights for Panera. This menu transformation signifies a return to the core strengths that have made Panera a favorite among consumers.
A Possible Farewell to Charged Lemonade?
One item that remains on the menu under scrutiny is the “Charged Lemonade,” a highly caffeinated drink. Removing this item from the menu could be perceived as an implied admission that something was amiss with it in the first place, experts have suggested.
