Method Dressing and Color-Coded Glamour: The “Wicked” Cast’s Oscars Red Carpet Looks

The stars of the upcoming “Wicked” movie made a captivating entrance at the 2023 Oscars red carpet in Los Angeles, showcasing their unique and color-coordinated looks as part of an intriguing “method dressing” approach.

Cynthia Erivo, portraying the wicked character Elphaba in the upcoming adaptation of the Broadway hit, donned a mesmerizing emerald-green custom Louis Vuitton gown. The gown boasted structured ruffle sleeves and an elegant train, reflecting Elphaba’s complex personality and the “wicked” nature of her character.

In contrast, Ariana Grande, cast as Glinda in this reimagining of the beloved story, turned heads in a voluminous bubblegum-pink Giambattista Valli gown. The radiant and elegant design perfectly embodied the persona of the good witch Glinda.

The trio’s co-star, Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), praised Grande as a “total princess, my princess,” during E!’s pre-Oscars show.

“Wicked,” a captivating retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, delves into the lives of Elphaba and Glinda before and after Dorothy Gale’s arrival. The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical adaptation, which serves as the basis for Jon M. Chu’s directorial movie, follows the two friends’ clash of opposing personalities, love interests, and political views. Eventually, they form an unbreakable bond.

Method dressing, a trend where actors incorporate aspects of their films or television shows into their outfits, has gained significant importance in awards shows, press tours, and even fashion events. Recently, the cast of “Dune: Part Two” has embraced this concept through futuristic, sci-fi inspired outfits. Last year, “Barbie” cast members donned pink ensembles at red carpets, leaving fans in awe as they wondered which historically accurate Barbie outfit Margot Robbie would reveal next.

Earlier this year, Erivo and Grande displayed their team spirit by wearing custom football jerseys to the Super Bowl. Both jerseys featured the number 27—the US release date of “Wicked”‘s first chapter.

Speaking to E!’s Laverne Cox, Grande shared her excitement about joining the beloved story: “There’s so much to balance; satisfying the fans while also bringing a new truth to these characters and finding new things within them.”

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, expressed their support for Erivo and Grande when the casting news was announced in 2021. Menzel wrote on Instagram: “Congrats to two amazing women… So much love.”
