Putin Emphasizes Importance of Space Projects and Nuclear Energy in Space

During a meeting with government officials on March 17, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the significance of prioritizing space projects, including the establishment of a nuclear power unit in space. According to TASS, the state news agency, Putin expressed his belief that Russia possesses unique competencies and resources that should be supported financially and developmentally for future applications.

“We have good competencies, and moreover, even have such reserves that we can be proud of, which we can count on in the future,” Putin stated during the meeting. “We need to finance it on time.”

The President urged government officials to set priorities and pay close attention to these valuable technologies, which can contribute significantly to solving future tasks. He also mentioned the example of a nuclear power unit that would operate in space as a potential priority.

Collaboration with China on Lunar Nuclear Project

Last week, Yuri Borisov, the head of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, shared that Russia and China are working on a project to install a nuclear reactor on the moon. Borisov made these comments during his address at a youth festival on March 5, as reported by TASS. He mentioned that the project could potentially be completed between 2033 and 2035.

In March 2021, Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration signed a memorandum on behalf of their governments to collaborate on creating an International Lunar Research Station.

Russia’s Nuclear Space Weapon: Under Development

Recent news has emerged regarding Russia’s efforts to develop a nuclear space weapon capable of disrupting satellites.
