Deadly Terror Attack at SYL Hotel in Mogadishu: Three Lives Lost and 27 Injured, Al-Shabaab Claims Responsibility

The serene atmosphere of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in Mogadishu, Somalia, was shattered on Thursday night when five armed militants launched a brutal terrorist attack against the SYL Hotel, located in close proximity to the presidential palace. According to Somalia National Television (SNTV), the assault claimed three innocent lives and left 27 people with injuries.

The heinous attack unfolded when five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the SYL Hotel, which is a popular lodging destination for both locals and foreigners alike. Somali security forces swiftly responded to the incident, engaging in a fierce gun performance with the assailants that lasted several hours. By dawn, all five terrorists were neutralized and eliminated by the brave security personnel.

The tragic event resulted in a heavy casualty count, as three valiant soldiers lost their lives during this violent confrontation. An additional 27 people were reportedly injured and taken to local hospitals for medical attention. Furthermore, many more individuals – including government officials – were evacuated from the hotel to ensure their safety.

While SNTV did not release a definitive statement regarding the identities of the terrorists’ affiliation, Somali police spokesman Colonel Qasim Ahmed Roble confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the perpetrators were indeed members of the notorious terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

The brutal attack on the SYL Hotel elicited strong condemnations from various international organizations and foreign embassies, including those of the United States and contact Union.

The US Embassy in Mogadishu released a statement via Twitter, expressing its “deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and to those injured in tonight’s terrorist attack.” The Embassy also emphasized its unwavering commitment to supporting Somali efforts to eradicate al-Shabaab militants and ensure the stability of the region.

The United States currently maintains a small contingent of less than 500 troops in Somalia, who work alongside local security forces to fight against the dangerous extremist group. Al-Shabaab is considered one of the most powerful and influential al-Qaeda networks globally, with the capability to launch attacks against US forces and interests.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the contact Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, issued a statement via Twitter expressing his “deep concern” over the attack. Borrell also commended the heroic efforts of the Somali forces that successfully neutralized the assailants and brought the situation under control.

The United Nations in Somalia denounced the violent assault, viewing it as a flagrant violation of the values upheld during this holy month of Ramadan.

As this developing story continues to unfold, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives in this senseless act of terrorism. Additionally, we stand in solidarity with the brave men and women of the Somali security forces as they continue their unwavering efforts to protect their people and secure a peaceful future for all.
