Although Bryce Dallas Howard gained widespread recognition in 2004 after starring in M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Village,” her parents, Ron and Cheryl Howard, had strict rules against their children working as child actors. In an interview with People magazine, Bryce shared her father’s perspective on this matter.
Ron Howard: Child Acting Is a Double-Edged Sword
Ron Howard, who gained fame as Opie Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1960 to 1966 and later starred in “Happy Days,” explained that while there are positive aspects to child acting, it also comes with significant risks. He shared his concerns with People:
“It’s possible for child performers to really find a lot that is positive within it, but it’s fraught with landmines. On top of everything else, because the characters that I played as a child were so well-known as to almost be iconic, I also thought, ‘Hey, if one of our kids tries to act as a child, boy or girl, they’re going to be unfairly compared.’”
Bryce Dallas Howard: Grateful for Parents’ Decision
Bryce Howard expressed her gratitude for her parents’ decision, stating that she was glad she didn’t start acting as a child. She shared her thoughts with People:
“I’m really glad that they did that because when I did start acting, it took a while to make a living. To be able to be like, ‘Oh, okay. I can actually support myself with this,’” she said.
Ron Howard’s decision to prevent his daughter from pursuing a child acting career ultimately proved beneficial for Bryce Dallas Howard, allowing her to establish herself as an accomplished actress in the entertainment industry when she was ready.
