Stellantis Recalls Over 280,000 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 Sedans Due to Potentially Defective Side Curtain Airbag Inflators

Stellantis, an automobile manufacturing company, has announced a recall of approximately 285,000 units of Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans in the United States. The reason for this massive recall is due to concerns regarding side curtain airbag inflators that could potentially burst, leading to the release of metal shrapnel within the vehicle cabin.

The Airbag Conundrum: Moisture Infiltration and Corrosion

Airbags function through a controlled chemical reaction that generates gas to inflate the airbag swiftly in case of an accident. However, the manufacturing process of some 2018 through 2021 Charger and 300 models might have allowed moisture to infiltrate the side curtain airbag inflators. This unwanted intrusion could potentially cause internal corrosion, eventually leading to cracks in the inflator housing, according to documents submitted by Stellantis to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Distinctive Issue: No Link to Takata Airbags

Although this issue shares some similarities with the infamous recall of millions of Takata airbag inflators that were used in various automobiles, Stellantis maintains that this problem is unrelated.

Communicating with Charger and 300 Owners: Proactive Measures

Starting in May 2023, Stellantis will send out letters to the owners of affected Charger and 300 sedans. These letters will contain instructions for bringing their vehicles into a dealership for the replacement of both sides’ side curtain airbags. This service, which includes labor and parts, will be provided at no cost to the owners. Additionally, Stellantis has promised to reimburse owners for any previous replacement costs related to this issue.

No Reported Injuries or Accidents, but Warnings Abound

At present, Stellantis has not recorded any accidents or injuries linked to this issue. However, there have been five documented instances of side curtain airbag inflators bursting in parked vehicles, primarily under conditions where the interior temperature surpassed 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This could be a common occurrence, especially during hot weather.

Stellantis’s Proactive Approach: Protecting Consumer Safety

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle manufacturers taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their customers. Stellantis is working diligently to address this issue and minimize any potential risks to consumers. Stay informed about your vehicle’s recall status through the NHTSA Website, manufacturer websites, or by contacting your dealership directly.
