Dramatic Fire Breaks Out on Carnival Freedom Cruise Ship Off the Coast of Bahamas

Heath Barnes, a seasoned traveler from Woodsboro, Maryland, was enjoying his Saturday afternoon on the upper decks of the Bahamas-bound Carnival Freedom cruise ship. The tranquility of the journey was soon shattered as he found himself in the midst of an unexpected and unnerving incident.

The serene atmosphere was abruptly disrupted by the loudest thunder and lightning he had ever experienced, causing him to take shelter inside the ship. However, his momentary respite was short-lived as he soon received some alarming news from his nephew and his nephew’s friends, all 16 years old, who informed him that the ship was on fire.

Initially skeptical of their account, Barnes went out onto his balcony to verify their claims. To his shock and disbelief, he was confronted with the sight of flames and smoke billowing from the port side of the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line reported that the fire originated around 3:15 p.m. local time on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. Witnesses speculated that the vessel may have been struck by lightning, but this theory is yet to be confirmed as the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

As the ship’s fire response team worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze, the captain steered the ship towards an area of heavy Rain in a bid to help douse the flames. The fire was finally brought under control approximately two hours after it first erupted.

Despite the turmoil, no guests were reported injured during the incident. However, two crew members sustained minor injuries from smoke inhalation while battling the flames.

Following the fire, a portion of the port side exhaust funnel fell onto deck 10 of the ship as a result of the damage. The incident occurred around 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, while the cruise was en route to Freeport.

Passengers were able to attend their scheduled dinner that evening, and all areas of the ship were reportedly fully operational as of the following day, with the exception of the open decks. The ship called at Freeport on Sunday without any operational issues, and Carnival does not anticipate any complications for the next scheduled departure of the Carnival Freedom from Port Canaveral on March 25.

The US Coast Guard has been informed about the incident.

Passengers were instructed to remain in their cabins until approximately 5:40 p.m., and Barnes shared footage of the incident with News Finder. Despite the unexpected turn of events, Barnes expressed his understanding that such incidents are beyond the control of cruise lines and attributed the occurrence to “Mother Nature.”

This was Barnes’s 18th Carnival Cruise trip, making it an experience that stood out for its uniqueness amidst his travel history.
