United States Transfers Seized Military Equipment from Iran to Ukraine to Bolster Defenses
The US military transferred a significant quantity of seized military equipment from Iran to Ukraine last week, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting the urgency of addressing Ukraine’s ongoing weapons and ammunition shortages in its prolonged conflict against Russia.

CENTCOM stated that the transferred materiel is sufficient to equip around 4,000 Ukrainian personnel with small-arms rifles in one brigade. The military equipment seized by the US and its partners between May 2021 and February 2023 from four separate stateless vessels was originally intended for Iranian forces. However, the US government did not gain legal ownership of this equipment until December 2022 via the Justice Department’s civil forfeiture process.
Precedent: Previous Transfers and Seizures
This is not the first instance of the US transferring Iranian military equipment to Ukraine. In October 2023, News Finder reported that over one million rounds of seized Iranian ammunition were handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces. Furthermore, over the past year, the US Navy, in collaboration with regional partners, has seized thousands of Iranian assault rifles and more than one million rounds of ammunition en route to Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Since late 2022, the Biden administration has been working diligently to facilitate the legal transfer of seized weapons from CENTCOM facilities across the Middle East to Ukraine.
