Michael J. Fox: A Friend, an Inspiration, and a Hero – Ryan Reynolds Pays Tribute

Michael J. Fox, the iconic actor, and advocate for Parkinson’s disease research, have been named among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people. In recognition of this esteemed accolade, his dear friend and fellow actor, Ryan Reynolds, penned a heartfelt tribute for the occasion.

In his poignant passage, Reynolds shares that he has known Fox “pretty damn well” for nearly two decades. He admires the actor’s unique blend of humor, warmth, handsomeness, and intelligence. Reynolds also acknowledges that Fox falls a lot, but he sees this not as a limitation, but rather as evidence of his fearlessness – a man who is unafraid to fly.

Their friendship has spanned over 17 years, and during that time Reynolds has been inspired by Fox’s unwavering commitment to raising the bar for purpose and passion in Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29 in 1991. In response to this life-altering diagnosis, he established the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000. This remarkable organization is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through research and ensuring improved therapies for those afflicted by this debilitating condition.

Reynolds acknowledges that Fox has played an essential role in helping his late father, James Reynolds, who lived with Parkinson’s for nearly 20 years before passing away in 2015. Fox’s advocacy and dedication to this cause helped millions, including Reynolds’ family, feel less alone during their struggles with the disease.

Describing Fox as a movie star who “shaped the lives of people all over the planet with a uniquely electric wit and self-aware charm,” Reynolds recalls a recent experience watching “Back to the Future” with his 8-year-old daughter, which has since become her favorite film.

Reynolds is grateful for the privilege of calling Fox a friend and shares that his daughter remains blissfully unaware that her father knows Marty McFly. He expresses his admiration for Fox’s compassionate nature and his gift of storytelling, but implores his daughter to learn one essential lesson from her beloved friend Marty McFly – that it’s okay to fall a lot. It’s the best way to know you’re flying.

Throughout his illustrious career, Michael J. Fox has touched the lives of countless individuals and continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for those battling Parkinson’s disease. Reynolds’ heartfelt tribute serves as a testament to the indelible mark Fox has left on his life and the lives of millions around the world.
