She has been diagnosed with Grade 3 breast cancer and is scheduled to undergo a mastectomy surgery. The senator expressed deep concern over the severity and advanced stage of her disease, as she may also require follow-up surgeries and possible radiation treatment.
Nadine Menendez, who stands accused alongside her husband in the ongoing case of acting as a foreign agent and accepting bribes, has also pleaded not guilty. While Bob Menendez’s trial began this week, Nadine’s trial is scheduled for July.
The couple have been charged with various offenses, including Bob Menendez serving as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt and Qatar while accepting bribes. Two co-defendants in the case, Wael Hana, an Egyptian American businessman, and Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate developer, have also pleaded not guilty.
During the opening statements at his trial this week, Menendez’s lawyer, Avi Weitzman, hinted to jurors that some of the alleged bribes given to the senator – such as gold bars and a luxury car – were actually owned or obtained by his wife.
